How One PHP Works

From the Colorado Physician Health Program eNews:

The Third Quarter of 2019-20 concluded March 31, 2020. CPHP assisted a total of 535 clients during that period, 58 of whom were new referrals.

Self-referrals made up 41% of the new referrals and 59% were made voluntarily. The primary reason new referrals sought services this quarter was for psychiatric conditions (27%) followed by a behavioral concern (24%), substance issues (15%) and work stress/burnout (10%).

CPHP conducted 61 comprehensive assessments during this time period and spent over 350 hours directly with our clients.

One hundred percent of those who completed our program in the Third Quarter did so successfully! To find more information, visit our website.

There are 24,680 active licensed physicians in Colorado. Using these figures, we see that the Colorado PHP is engaging about 2% of the physicians in the state. There are over 100,000 active licensed physicians in California; if 2% of them used the services of a statewide PHP, we’d see two thousand physicians involved.

In California, with the passage of SB1177 in 2016, the Medical Board of California was authorized to create a Physician Health and Wellness Program and required to develop regulations to govern how it would function. Those regulations are still in development by the MBC.
