Status Notes On Getting A PHP For California

In last two CPPPH newsletters (July and August), we have reported on the different steps the Medical Board must complete to establish a MBC Physician and Surgeon Health and Wellness Program in compliance with the legislation passed in 2016 – SB1177.

This month, we learned more about the MBC’s proposed regulations for how the Program will be implemented.  They were submitted to the Department of Consumer Affairs (the parent body of the MBC) as required.  The Department returned them to the Medical Board with changes and the Medical Board staff is incorporating those changes now.

In a presentation to a workshop at the annual meeting of the California Society of Addiction Medicine in Anaheim on September 4th, Kimberley Kirchmeyer, Executive Director of the Medical Board, explained that the proposed regulations will be on the agenda of the November 7-8 meeting of the Medical Board at the Westin San Diego | Opal and Topaz Rooms | 400 West Broadway | San Diego.

Updated Guidelines for Physican Health Programs

The Federation of State Physician Health Program (FSPHP) has updated its guidelines for PHPs and published the 2019 edition on its website.   The new 2019 Guidelines expand upon the previous edition, reflecting developments in the science, practice, and scope of PHP services over the past decade.   To order copies ($99): https://www.fsphp.org/guidelines.

The Federation is coming to California in 2020:  FSPHP Annual Educational Conference and Business Meeting, April 30 to May 3, 2020 at Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego.  The FSPHP meeting is always held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) and there is always one joint session of the two groups together.
FYI: the FSPHP newsletters are on its website and contain reports from the educational presentations from past annual meetings and information about the physician health programs in other states.   https://www.fsphp.org/newsletters.
